Grammarly
The quick answer
Should you try Grammarly?
Try it if: Fixing mistakes and making an everyday English email or document clearer while you write.
Skip it if: Replacing your judgment about what to say, checking important facts, or assuming every AI rewrite is included indefinitely on Free.
Free-plan reality: Grammarly lists a $0 Free plan and 100 generative AI prompts per month. In our Free account, one rewrite worked without payment but was labeled “Pro suggestion · Free sample”; repeated access to that suggestion is not guaranteed.
Before you paste or upload: Individual Free users can opt out of product-improvement and model-training use of content; we did not inspect the test account setting. Generative prompts may be sent to vetted service providers. Avoid sensitive material.
Open the official Grammarly siteHave an email that says the right things but sounds rough? Write your own short draft, let Grammarly suggest clearer wording, then check every fact and promise before sending it. It helps with expression; it does not decide what you should say.
What Grammarly helps with
Grammarly flags writing issues as you type and can suggest a clearer email or document. It is most useful when you already know the facts and want help expressing them.
In our Free-account test, we wrote a fictional neighborhood book-swap email with grammar errors. It said there were 12 volunteers, the room and date were not confirmed, and the team should reply with availability by Friday. Grammarly showed a writing score of 78 and two suggestions. We asked AI Chat to make it clear and friendly without inventing a venue or date. The proposed rewrite kept those facts. We did not accept the change or send the email.
The easiest way to start
- Open Grammarly Docs or its supported writing assistant. Check whether your account says Free or Pro.
- Write a rough, non-sensitive email yourself. Note the people, dates, numbers, and requested action that must stay.
- Review grammar suggestions. For an AI rewrite, try: “Make this email clear and friendly. Keep the number of volunteers, the unconfirmed room and date, and the request for a Friday reply. Do not invent missing details.”
- Compare the result with your original. Check every name, number, deadline, and promise before copying it into a real email.
Free-plan reality
Grammarly lists a $0 Free plan with 100 generative AI prompts per month. Our existing account showed Free, and one AI Chat rewrite worked without payment. But the result itself was labeled “Pro suggestion · Free sample.” Do not assume that exact advanced suggestion remains available repeatedly without Pro. We did not test a full month of use, a new signup, or whether a new account requires a credit card.
Privacy and limitations
Grammarly says individual Free users can opt out of content use for model training and product improvement. We checked the official help, not the setting on this test account. Generative AI may send prompt text and context to vetted providers to return a result. Do not paste client secrets, sensitive personnel details, or unreleased company material. A polished rewrite may also change your meaning. Grammarly is not a fact checker.
Why H5W rates it this way
Our first test improved clarity while keeping the important facts. The Free-versus-Pro boundary for the AI rewrite was less clear: the result was presented as a Pro suggestion available as a Free sample. These strengths and limits support H5W’s 4.6/5 rating.
