Free-plan reality: Perplexity Standard is free. The current plan comparison lists practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches per day, 1 Research query per month, and limited file uploads. These limits may change. A paid trial or promotion may ask for a payment method; the basic search tested here did not require one.

Before you paste or upload: Do not paste confidential details or assume a cited answer is private or correct. In the free account we inspected, Settings → Preferences had an “AI Data Retention” switch that allowed searches to be used to improve AI models; it was on. Review your own setting before sharing personal information.

What Perplexity helps with

Perplexity is useful when ordinary web search gives you too many links. It summarizes a topic and places citations beside the answer so you can open the originals.

The easiest way to start

  1. Ask one focused question, including the date or location if it matters.
  2. Open the two or three most important citations instead of trusting the summary alone.
  3. Rewrite your question if the sources are weak, old, or do not directly support the claim.

In our October 13 test, a basic search found the U.S. State Department’s passport processing-time page and correctly separated the listed 4–6 weeks of routine processing from mailing time. We opened the government page to check. Treat the citation as a starting point for verification, especially when dates, costs, eligibility, or safety matter.

A useful tip

Ask it to use primary sources such as an official help page, government site, or research paper. Then verify that the linked page actually says what the answer claims.

What to watch for

Citations make checking easier, but they do not guarantee the summary is accurate or that the best source was chosen.

Why H5W gave it this rating

The visible citations are beginner-friendly and useful, but careful source checking is still required.
