Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)
The quick answer
Should you try Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)?
Try it if: Ask a focused question about a long, non-sensitive source and open the cited passage to check the answer.
Skip it if: Confidential files without policy review, unsupported high-stakes decisions, or treating citations as automatic proof.
How to read this initial rating: Initial H5W directory score based on task fit and beginner usefulness. A limited two-question source-grounded hands-on check was completed; Free-tier performance and a full feature review are still pending.
Open the official Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) siteHave a long guide or document and need one answer from it? Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, lets you add a source, ask a specific question, and open the cited passage before you use the answer. Start with a public or non-sensitive source—not a confidential work file.
What it helps with
It works well when your question is about material you provide: a public web page, PDF, video, audio file, or your own notes. It is less useful if you need a quick answer with no source to check, or if your workplace does not permit uploading the material. A citation is a place to check, not a guarantee that the answer is correct.
Try one small task
- Sign in with a Google account at the official Gemini Notebook site. Create a notebook and add one non-sensitive source, such as a public article you need to understand.
- Ask one narrow question and tell it not to invent missing details. Use the prompt below as a starting point.
- Open the citations. Check the original passage for names, dates, and any decision that matters before you act.
Copy this prompt
Based only on [MY SOURCE], list three things I should check before [MY TASK]. Cite the passage for each point. If an owner, deadline, or other required detail is not stated, say it is missing rather than guessing.
Replace these fields: Replace [MY SOURCE] with the source you added and [MY TASK] with the real thing you need to finish, such as sending a meeting follow-up email. Check every citation before using the answer.
In H5W’s test, Gemini Notebook imported a public H5W meeting-follow-up guide and returned three pre-send checks with source citations. It did not invent an owner or deadline. Another test using a Google-featured public notebook answered a time-budget question with clickable citations, but gave more detail than requested. We did not upload a private file, test PDF export, or test a newly created Free account.
Free access and sign-up
Google account sign-in is required. Google currently describes access without a paid plan as having standard, compute-based limits. Usage depends on factors such as the question, feature, model, and chat length; quota generally refreshes about every five hours until a weekly limit is reached. Check Settings → Usage in your own account. Do not rely on an old fixed number of free questions per day. Our signed-in test account did not display a clear plan name, so the observed test is not a Free-tier performance claim. No payment prompt appeared during our two tests, but we did not test new-account onboarding or credit-card requirements.
Privacy and limits
Google says notebook content is not used to directly train its foundational models unless you provide feedback. Feedback may include prompts, sources, uploads, and outputs, and can be human-reviewed. Information shared with other Google services may follow those services’ own notices. For work or personal records, check your organization’s rules and remove sensitive details before adding a source. Always verify a cited passage; do not let the tool invent dates, owners, or decisions.
Our take
For a beginner, the strongest use is asking a focused question of one long, safe source and opening the citation. The 4.7/5 shown here remains H5W’s initial directory score, not a newly calibrated full-review rating. We tested two source-based questions; we have not tested every source type, export, audio feature, mobile experience, or Free-account sign-up.
