Free-plan reality: ChatGPT is free for everyday text chats. OpenAI’s current Free-tier FAQ describes those chats as unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards; uploads, image creation, data analysis, voice, and other tools have separate limits that can change. Our email-drafting task was tested on Pro, not Free.

Before you paste or upload: On personal plans, eligible chats may be used to improve models depending on settings. Check Settings → Data controls → “Improve the model for everyone.” Temporary Chat stays out of history and is not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI says a copy may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. Never paste passwords or confidential records.

What ChatGPT helps with

ChatGPT is a useful first stop when you have a mixed everyday task: turn rough notes into an email, explain a difficult paragraph, summarize a document, brainstorm options, or create a simple visual.

The easiest way to start

  1. Open ChatGPT and describe the result you need in one sentence.
  2. Add the useful context, but remove names, account numbers, private records, and company secrets.
  3. Ask for a first draft, then check facts, numbers, names, and tone before you use it.

In a temporary-chat test on a Pro account, we asked for an under-80-word email telling coworkers that a meeting moved from Tuesday at 10 a.m. to Wednesday at 11 a.m. ChatGPT made a polite, editable draft, kept the agenda unchanged, and did not invent a time zone or meeting link. No email was sent. You should still check the recipient, date, time, and tone before using a draft.

A useful tip

Tell it who the result is for and what a good answer should look like. “Write a friendly 120-word reply for a customer” works better than “write an email.”

What to watch for

It can sound confident when it is wrong. Treat factual answers as a starting point and verify anything important against a reliable source.

Why H5W gave it this rating

It is unusually versatile and easy to start, but free limits and the need to verify answers keep it from a perfect score.
