Free-plan reality: Grok has a $0 Free option, and our signed-in test account showed “Subscription Free.” The Free account handled this web-source check without a payment prompt. Grok and its paid plan names and allowances are changing: new accounts may see The X Subscription, while existing SuperGrok plans can continue. Free chat and voice have limits, but the current official pages do not give one dependable number of free messages for every account. Check your own usage and upgrade screen rather than assuming an unlimited free plan. We did not test new-account signup or its credit-card requirement.

Before you paste or upload: Review Grok.com Settings → Data Management before using personal information. On our Free test account, model-improvement and history-personalization switches were on; we did not change them. Private Chat says it will not appear in history or be used for training, but this is not a zero-retention promise. Never paste secrets or connect email, calendars, X, or other accounts just to try a simple question.

What Grok helps with

Grok can answer questions, brainstorm, write, search the web and X, analyze files, and create media. It makes the most sense when those capabilities fit one real task.

What we tried: In a Free account’s Private Chat, we asked Grok to check a fictional shop’s shipping claim against USPS’s own pages: “USPS Ground Advantage always arrives in two business days.” Grok found the official page, correctly explained that the usual expected window is 2–5 days and delivery is not guaranteed, and linked to USPS. Its first answer did not include the short customer-facing correction we requested; one follow-up produced it. For a claim that affects a customer, open the cited official page yourself before sending the wording.

The easiest way to start

  1. Sign in at the official Grok site.
  2. Ask one focused question or attach a non-sensitive file.
  3. For current claims, open the original source and confirm the date, author, and context.

A useful tip

If a response relies on an X post, ask for the original announcement, document, or first-party page as well.

What to watch for

A fast answer about a current claim is not the same as reliable evidence. X posts can be incomplete or wrong; prefer the original government, company, or other first-party page, and confirm its date and context. On our test account, “Improve the Model” and conversation-history personalization were on; we did not change them. Grok.com offers Settings → Data Management to control model improvement for new conversations, and Private Chat says it will not appear in history or be used for model training. That is not a reason to paste confidential files or secrets. Do not connect email, calendars, X, or other accounts just to try a simple question.

Why H5W gave it this rating

The broad feature set is easy to explore, but beginners need stronger source-checking habits for current-event answers.
