How to Plan a Move With AI
You know the moving date, but the job still feels like one giant pile: packing, utilities, internet, address changes, keys, pets, and the final cleanup.
Give AI the dates and household details it actually needs, ask for a week-by-week checklist, and require [LOCAL CHECK] beside anything that depends on your lease, city, state, utility, or government rules. Keep your exact address and account details out of the prompt.
The fastest way to do it
- Write down the move date, key dates, household size, rooms, pets, booked services, and must-have deadlines.
- Leave out exact addresses, account numbers, logins, and payment information.
- Paste the prompt below.
- Separate confirmed commitments from AI suggestions.
- Check local and official tasks before adding them to your calendar.
Copy this prompt
Create a realistic week-by-week moving checklist from the details below.
Separate the plan into:
– Do now
– Schedule before moving week
– Moving week
– First week after the move
Use only the dates and commitments I provide. You may suggest normal moving tasks, but label them
SUGGESTED.Add

The SUGGESTED label is important. Without it, AI may make a reasonable idea look like a confirmed obligation.
What happened in H5W's real test
H5W tested this workflow in a logged-in Gemini Temporary Chat on October 12, 2026. The fictional move involved two adults, one indoor cat, a one-bedroom rental, a booked mover, a fixed key date, a lease-end date, and a remote-work internet deadline. No real address was used.
Gemini created a useful timeline and kept the supplied dates straight. It scheduled key pickup, mover arrival, internet setup, final cleaning, and the lease-end handoff. It also marked many lease, utility, mail, pet, and walkthrough items with [LOCAL CHECK], and labeled many added ideas as SUGGESTED.
The result still added details that looked confirmed. It introduced an 8:30 AM move-day preparation time that was not provided, and one section said the final cleaning service “takes place” even though the source said it had not been booked.

Useful lesson: labels help, but they do not catch every invented detail. Check every time, booking, and commitment before copying the plan into your calendar.
The five details that improve the plan most
- Your move date: the anchor for every other task.
- Access dates: when keys are available and when the old place must be returned.
- Household details: number of people, rooms, pets, and accessibility needs.
- Confirmed bookings: movers, truck, cleaners, storage, or travel.
- Non-negotiable deadlines: internet for work, school start, elevator reservation, or building access.
You do not need to include names or exact addresses for AI to build the sequence.
Check these items outside the AI tool
Your lease and building
Check notice, key return, cleaning, elevator, parking, and inspection rules in the actual lease or with the property manager.
Utilities and internet
Confirm availability, installation dates, deposits, and cancellation rules directly with the provider.
Mail forwarding
Use the official USPS website or a Post Office. USPS warns that third-party sites may charge much more for a change of address. USPS currently says a verified request may need 7 to 10 business days to take effect.
Government records
USAGov lists separate address-change routes for services such as taxes, Social Security, driver's licenses, vehicle registration, and voter registration. Requirements vary, so use the official link for your location.
Pets and children
Check building, travel, school, and health requirements with the relevant official source or professional. Do not rely on a general AI checklist.
Privacy tips
Do not paste:
- your full old or new address;
- access or alarm codes;
- lease account numbers;
- utility logins;
- identity documents;
- payment-card information;
- children's school records;
- pet medical records.
“Moving 35 miles within the same state” is often enough for an initial plan.

The bottom line
AI is good at turning dates and constraints into a first checklist. It does not know your lease, local rules, or provider requirements unless you verify them. Use it to organize the move, not to decide what is legally or officially required.
Before packing, create a room-by-room home inventory with AI so important items, photos, and receipts stay connected.
